FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The tools of a judge: Lady Justice, a gavel, law books, and notepad.

How much is the attorney's fee?

There is nothing owed to the lawyer unless there is money paid for your claim.  A personal injury lawyer works on a contingency fee, which means the fee is a percentage of your bodily injury settlement or verdict.  The fee is 33.33% if the matter settles without having to file a lawsuit, and 38% after a lawsuit is filed.

Do I have to pay anything upfront to hire an attorney?

No.  A personal injury lawyer covers the necessary costs involved in your claim such as securing medical records, police report, medical billing records, and court filing fees.  The attorney will be reimbursed once he secures compensation for you.

What is my case worth?

Frankly, it depends on a lot of factors and each case is very unique.  Some of those factors are the type and extent of injuries, what kind of medical care you received, the cost of the past medical care, whether you lost earnings from your job, and if you need more medical attention.

Do I really need an attorney?

Yes, you do.  Insurance companies, including your own automobile or health insurer, are in the business of saving money on claims so they can make a profit.  They do this by taking advantage of claimants who do not know how to make a claim or value a claim.  Insurance companies also take advantage of the "connection" or long relationship that a claimant may feel she or he has with their own insurance company to where the claimant mistakenly believes her or his claim is being handled fairly and the money offered is reasonable.

How long with it take?

Most likely several months, and sometimes over a year from the injury date.  The kind of injuries you suffered, and the extent of the medical care you receive are the primary factors in the lifespan of a claim.  In addition, often times filing suit against the at-fault party is necessary to get the proper attention and reasonable compensation from an insurance company.  Insurance company claims adjusters have little incentive to make reasonable settlement offers.

Does Lewis Injury handle other types of legal matters?

No.  Our firm exclusively works for people who are injured or lost a loved one due to another person's negligence.  Personal injury matters require specialized experience, and they cannot be even adequately handled by an attorney that does not regularly and daily pursue civil justice.
